“I have always worked with figures in fictional landscape. Since 2000 I have drawn / painted the Desert Pilgrim series, anchored in the landscapes of the canyons and desert of Utah. I see these itinerant figures in the southwest in relation to the wanderers in Hieronymus Bosch's work and to the lady in the fifteenth century Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. The main figure, a painter / pilgrim in the desert, has various creatures and icons as ancillaries: an owl, a book, a cave, rock cliffs, desert flora, and southwestern plains. The desert horizon and pilgrim's meditations summon these figures to dwell in the work, to become singular.”
In the 21st century, Ann worked on three major projects: 1.) The Desert Pilgrim series, described in her own words above; 2.) Woman’s Faces, a series of drawings depicting the facial expressions of fictional women; and 3.)the Blue Tree series, visionary watercolors that portray twisted and maimed trees in a landscape inspired by southern Utah. In Ann’s words, “Blue Tree Series is part of an experiment in using water colors.”
